Reception & Mid-Year Reception at Pulteney

The best reception

Starting school is a moment. All the small steps over the years have led you here, and now you need to know, how will they go?
Give them the best reception, at Pulteney.

Why consider Pulteney for your child's start to school?

At Pulteney, we strive to provide the best reception – a nurturing, play-based transition into school life that ensures children feel secure, supported and excited to learn. With small class sizes, specialist teachers, and a strong focus on wellbeing, we create the right conditions for children to develop confidence, curiosity and friendships that set them up for success.

The best start to school begins early

At Pulteney, the journey to Reception does not begin on the first day of school.

For many children, it begins in our Early Learning Centre, a nurturing, play-based environment where curiosity is encouraged, relationships are built and confidence quietly grows. Whether your child joins us in ELC, Mid-Year Reception or Full-Year Reception, our focus is the same: to ensure they feel known, supported and ready to learn.

Our Transition to School program - a personalised transition led by a dedicated transition teacher

Unique to Pulteney is the role of our dedicated Transition Teacher.

This specialist position exists solely to ensure your child moves confidently into Reception, whether they are transitioning from our Pulteney Early Learning Centre or from another kindergarten or early learning setting.

Rather than a single orientation visit, Pulteney offers an intentional and carefully structured transition cycle across the year.

Our Transition Teacher works collaboratively with ELC educators, external early learning providers and Reception teachers to develop a deep understanding of each child’s strengths, interests and individual learning needs.

This includes:

  • Building strong relationships with children and families prior to commencement
  • Liaising with current educators to ensure continuity of learning
  • Developing individual transition plans where appropriate
  • Communicating clearly with families about routines, expectations and key milestones
  • Familiarising children with Junior School environments and staff

A structured, nurturing learning environment where your child will explore, create and grow

Purpose-built learning spaces

Our youngest learners thrive in dedicated environments designed just for them:

  • Kurrajong Library – storytelling, early literacy, digital technology, and inquiry-based learning
  • Junior Art Room – fostering creativity and self-expression
  • Junior Music Facilities – cultivating musical skills, rhythm, and auditory development

Specialist learning & enrichment

Unique to Pulteney Reception, students benefit from specialist-led lessons from experienced teachers in Art, Music, Physical Education, Science, and Mandarin.

The ‘ready to learn’ approach – supporting your child’s wellbeing

We know that starting school can feel overwhelming—for children and parents. That’s why we take a whole-child approach to learning, focusing not just on academics but also on wellbeing, confidence, and social-emotional growth.

A strong sense of belonging

Early connection to the Pulteney community helps children develop confidence, friendships, and a love of learning that lasts well beyond their first year.

Mid-Year Reception

A unique two-term program, Mid-Year Reception provides a stepping stone into school for children who are ready to start their learning journey mid-year.

This extended transition period helps children ease into school life, building their confidence and familiarity with routines before beginning full-time Reception.

  • A nurturing start – More time to settle into school life before formal Reception
  • Confidence & independence – Encourages early decision-making and resilience
  • Social-emotional growth – Helps children learn to manage emotions, build friendships, and navigate new experiences
  • Academic readiness – Early exposure to literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving in a fun, play-based way
  • Access to specialist teachers – your child will learn from specialist teachers in science, Mandarin, music, art and more

With six terms of Reception, your child will feel secure, prepared and excited for the next stage of their education.

Places for Mid-Year Reception 2026 are limited.

Zones of regulation & Kimochis for emotional wellbeing

At Pulteney, children learn to recognise and regulate their emotions using tools like the Zones of Regulation and Kimochis.

These simple, effective strategies help them:

  • Identify feelings like excitement, nervousness, or frustration
  • Develop resilience and independence
  • Build friendships and navigate social interactions with confidence

By nurturing emotional intelligence alongside academic skills, we ensure every child feels safe, supported, and truly ready to learn.
