‘Girl Asleep’, presented by Pulteney Grammar School Year 12 Drama

THE STORY

In 1978 on the eve of her 15th birthday, Greta Driscoll would rather disappear than step onto the glittery, disco-lit dancefloor of growing up.

Shy and desperate to avoid attention, Greta is pushed into hosting an awkward party by her relentlessly enthusiastic parents. At the party, the house is alive with flair: platform shoes teeter across the shag-pile carpet; a lava lamp glows in the corner; and a spinning vinyl sets the tone for a night that promises way more than Greta bargained for.

Surrounding her is a cast of eccentric and confronting figures: her confidently quirky best friend; the unpredictable bullies, and her older sister, who seems to be drifting further into a world of eyeliner and late-night rebellion that Greta can’t quite understand.

As Greta is propelled into a parallel place that’s violent and thoroughly ludicrous, a mysterious figure lurks on the edges, who may be more than they appear.

As the night spirals into a surreal, technicolour dreamscape, our audience will be immersed in a bizarre and sometimes frightening journey through Greta’s fears, desires, and imagination – where childhood and adulthood collide in unexpected ways. Part fairytale and part vigilante escapade, this is an adventure where heroism and gender implode in a bold exploration of sisterhood.

Funny, strange, and deeply heartfelt, this Australian play is a visually inventive story about identity, family, and the exhilarating leap into coming-of-age… all set to the unforgettable rhythm of the 1970s.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

• Haze and smoke effect will be used.
• The performance contains very occasional coarse language (three mild expletives & one slur word), and features themes of growing up, bullying, anxiety, hormones, and first love, It is recommended for audiences aged 14+. Whilst the play deals with the emotions of how tough adolescence can feel, Girl Asleep is also wild, silly and very fun, loosely inspired by Sleeping Beauty and The Wizard of Oz. This Australian play was written for a teen audience and has been staged by many secondary schools.
• If you have any questions regarding the show’s suitability or would like more specific information about its content, please don’t hesitate to contact the director.
• There is a small carpark at the venue you can access via a driveway off Holden St, otherwise please arrive early to secure a free park in the public surrounding streets.
• The performance will begin at 7pm and a LOCK-OUT applies (meaning, you will forfeit your ticket and miss the performance if you arrive late).
• The theatre has raked seating and all tickets are general admission; if you require accessibility support and need to reserve a ground-floor/front row seat, please contact the director at least one day prior to the performance.
• The Front of House will be open from 6:15pm for you to enjoy pre-show refreshments; please note that the theatre operates a cashless bar.
