Sport – Senior School

Anglican Cup

Last Wednesday 11 May 2022, Pulteney’s winter sport program opened with the Annual Senior School Anglican Cup involving Pedare, Woodcroft, St Johns and Pulteney. It was a carnival atmosphere with all sports hosted at Pulteney Grammar School. It was a great day with those competing enjoying healthy competition in Basketball, Football, Hockey, Netball and Soccer.  We had multiple wins in all sports across the day. Woodcroft took the Cup home, with Pulteney coming third by only 1 point to St John’s. Henry Moseley represented the School incredibly well and was nominated “Fair Player” of the day in Soccer.

We look forward to another opportunity to play for the Cup in Term 4, when Middle School participate in Touch Football, Cricket, Tennis and Volleyball.

First Week of Winter Sport

The SAAS winter sports competition commenced for 2022 this week. Pulteney took to the courts, field, and ovals, bringing home numerous outstanding and convincing wins for the school.

Soccer
Pulteney’s First XI soccer season kicked off last week with the Anglican Cup. It was heavy day of soccer, with three Cup matches followed by the first round of the Division 2 competition. Being our first real kick out, our Coach, Lucas Pantelis took the Anglican Cup matches as the opportunity to assess all players positionally and rotate everyone to ensure that all players stayed fresh given the 4pm league game. Despite losses in two of our three Anglican Cup matches, this method proved hugely successful with a strong 7-1 win over Sacred Heart in our Division 2 match at the end of the day. An away match at Sacred Heart College, Henry Moseley put on an outstanding display with 4 goals, with Cameron Hughes (2) and Ryan Cook adding to the tally. All players put in a good performance that we hope will continue and improve in coming matches.

This year, in addition to participating in the league competition, the First XI team will participate in the Knockout competition, due to start in the next month. It would be fantastic to see as many staff as possible and students out during home games to cheer the team on. Our next match is at home on the Harriers pitch, 4pm, 18 May against Nazareth Catholic College.

Our Middle School teams played on Saturday morning with Middle A drew (4 – 4) against Rostrevor and our Middle B team not having such a successful morning out, However Flynn Ritossa scoring our goal for the game.

Basketball
Pulteney returned to the court this winter with a strong win across all games played.

Pulteney played Scotch College in Senior A, B and Middle A, B and C. All teams had convincing wins by over 20 points. Special mention must be made to our Middle School team who had a stand-out game winning by 90 points on Scotch’s home court.

Football
Scott Camporeale, Jack Reed, Brett Baldey could not have been prouder of the Pulteney Middle School Football Team, who competed against St Michael’s straight Year 9 team. The team went down by just 3 goals, having kicked 8 points in the last quarter. The team showed teamwork, commitment and care as they wore the PGS Football Jumper with pride.

Cross Country
Pulteney Grammar hosted the first Cross Country run for the season. It was a great event with over 91 runners. Our students were outstanding, competing amongst St Peters Boys and Girls. Thank you to Abbey and Gabe stepping up helping the primary students before the event, and the other Middle School athletes helping as well.

If you would like to improve your running distance, skills or switch off from your academic studies please contact the Sports Department (sportsdepartment@pulteney.sa.edu.au), even if you are unable to commit to the Wednesday meets.

Hockey
Our Hockey season commenced in strong form on Wednesday 11 May 2022 with the Middle School drawing with Scotch. Our senior side took the field on Saturday, unfortunately depleted by COVID. Those who attended represented the School with pride, determination, and respect. If you would like to participate in Hockey despite your previous experience, we would love you to come out and have a go. Please contact Mr Gould via email to express your interest.

Table Tennis
Table Tennis opened the season on Friday night with our Middle A and B battling it out against Pembroke. Unfortunately, our Senior B game was cancelled. We look forward to the season ahead and following their competitive season.

Volleyball
The winter volleyball program has kicked off to a busy start to Term 2, commencing external games with all teams in Week 1. Despite having to miss a few games due to COVID and prior commitments, we have had great results with both the Senior Girls and Boys teams, with our A’s winning all their game so far and special mention to our Senior B Boy’s getting their first win, despite being moved up into the top division! All our middle teams have also shown very strong signs of improvement so far, despite also being moved up a division. All our teams are looking promising ahead of the rest of the season.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Flynn Ritossa (Under 14 in Stadium) and Gabe Wilson (Mens Under 20 0 in Stadium) who have been nominated for the Athletics – South Australian Award Finalists.

Reminder
A reminder that if students are unable to fulfill their sporting commitment of one training a week and games, they are to communicate this to their coaches or the sports department. This ensures we can successfully manage our teams, communicate with our opposition, and represent school in a positive and professional manner.
